Emily Carr University of Art + Design is named after internationally famous Victoria born artist Emily Carr (1871-1945.) Emily Carr was a renowned artist, potter, fabric artist, environmentalist, and, rooming house owner, who lived most of her life in Victoria BC.
Emily Carr university is the most sought after university for people pursuing art, visual arts, and, design in Canada. Since 1980 the university has been located on Granville Island, in Vancouver, BC, and has helped Granville Island become a landmark location.
As well as one of the largest indoor farmer's markets, the island is a hub for high end art, design, craft stores, Aboriginal clothing designers, mask carvers, and jewelry artists. It is also home to marine specialty stores - the island sits on False Creek and has its own marina, theatre, restaurants, wine stores, and a children's shopping area.
Emily Carr university students play a major part in the artistic direction of Granville Island, as many art, design, pottery, and sculpture businesses are located there. There is even a wood workers' cooperative in the centre of Granville Island that displays and sells the amazing wood based artwork and sculpture of Emily Carr students.
One of the highlights of Emily Carr University is the annual open house that displays the visual work of the graduating students. Free to everyone, it can often be a shoulder-to-shoulder affair as it is one of the most popular and must see events on the island.
