The University Of Alberta Gets $200M Research Grant

The University of Alberta (U of A) will be receiving a $200-million federal research grant.
This funding comes from the Canada Foundation for Innovation research money under the country's Economic Action Plan. The university – located in Edmonton – is currently ranked second in terms of total research funding. This is based on data compiled by The Impact Group, a Toronto-based consultant firm.
The U of A is slated to spend some $514 million for research. It had only half of this amount spent for research a decade ago. Recently, the university has become one of Canada's leading research center powerhouses.
Research studies at the university are being done in fields such as medicine, nanotechnology and energy. It is currently developing technology to assess underground oil sand deposits. The school is said to be focusing on research as its way of building its national and international profile.
Canada's Economic Action Plan has a total of $600 million set aside for academic research.
